What an adult family home is

July 3, 2026

The front of a house

An adult family home is a house licensed to care for a few adults. In Washington that number is small, often six or fewer. Staff cook in the kitchen. Residents have bedrooms, not a long corridor of units. The license, the inspections, and the care plan are real. The building still looks like somebody’s house.

Assisted living is usually larger. It can offer more activities on a calendar and more neighbors. It can also be noisy, and a resident can go hours without a familiar face. A small house trades the calendar for repetition and for caregivers who notice a quiet change.

Cost follows the level of care. Ask any home for its disclosure of charges before you compare a monthly number. A low rent that leaves out medication help or incontinence care is not a low bill.

Read the levels of care we use, then come see a weekday afternoon.
